As I only recently found out that 3000 AD was offering 3 of it's games for free, I had yet to post about them.

Personally, my favorite is Universal Combat.
(It's been a while since I played any of these games, so my memory is a little rusty)
Part of the Battlecruiser series of games, it has a much more difficult learning curve than even EVE Online, but the end result is a living, breathing game with much to do and see.
When you start up UC, it lets you choose in single player between being a Commander, Planetary Combat Pilot, Space Combat Pilot, or any one of the other "Grunt" style folks.
The Commander, Planetary, and Space careers each are given an Asset that they can name, with the Commander being given everything from a Carrier, Cruiser, or Merchant ship, again based on the Race and Class within that Career.
For Example, I usually play as an EarthCom Human Commander of either a Super Carrier, or a regular Carrier.
EarthCom stands for Earth Command, the section of space around Earth and everything out to (I think) Jupiter.
Unfortunately for the Humans, the Gammulans, (Another Race) they get something called a G-Super Carrier.
I don't know much about Battlecruiser 3000AD or Battlecruiser Millennium, as they were before my time in gaming.
